Host a Japanese Family for Dinner
How fun would it be to host a Japanese family and cook for them?
The only problem is that Sara and I don’t really have room for 4 extra people for dinner… Maybe if we moved the kitchen table into the living room and put the leaf in.
I’ll have to start listening to japanesepod101 again and brush up, I’ve been lax in my studies!
Japanese tourists visiting New York City often ask if they can eat dinner with a “regular American family,” according to the Talk of the Town in this week’s New Yorker.
The Japanese Travel Bureau here in New York has to turn down these repeated requests becasue they cannot find New Yorkers to host them. “Nobody will do it in New York,” said tour leader Carol Elk.
Sign me up! I’d surely host a family of Japanese tourists for a dinner at my apartment and then dream that someday I’d make it to Japan and they would return the exchange. Would you host some tourists and their translator too? What would you serve?

Wow. Most definitely! (Except that… well… You know all about my space troubles… I have barely enough room for ME to crawl into my apt, nevermind 4 other people, lol. That and I’m an absolutely horrible cook!)
Potentially, one reason no one signs up is that in and around the city rent is decently high for a mid-sized apt, so most of us just don’t have the space? (The other being, I’m guessing that not many people know about this awesome idea…)
One day, in the too far distant future, when I’m rich (though not quite famous) and own a house, I’ll be able to participate.
