Where’s Eric gone? Clipmarks, Twitter, Flickr, and a new project!
April 20th, 2007
Updates here have been light for the past few months, but that doesn’t mean I’ve stopped writing. I’m getting a bit of a queue built up for a new project (currently in stealth mode) which is a lot of fun. I’ve actually planned out the first year of the blog for that project, and I’m doing quite a bit of the writing ahead of time to be sure that I’ve can continue to momentum, even as life tries to get in the way.
In the meantime, I’m of course clipping and commenting up a storm over at http://clipmarks.com/clipper/ericskiff. I’ve also become quite addicted to twitter. If you’re on twitter, you can find me here: http://twitter.com/ericskiff. New photos are always going up on Flickr as well! Last, but not least, Sara and I are still doing The Alternative Music Show.
If you’re in NYC and want to play some frisbee, Mike from Blip.tv and I have been putting together a friendly game of ultimate most weekends. Drop me a line at frisbee AT glitchnyc.com and let me know if you’d like to join in!
What’s the one gift you can always get a photo-happy geek?

A new camera, of course!
I’ll admit it. I’m spoiled rotten. I’ve only had my new camera for 2 days, and I’m completely ruined on other cameras! I don’t think I’ll ever be able to go back.
My new toy is the Canon S3 IS, recommend by Jon, affirmed by the beautiful shots taken with it on flickr, and gifted by my lovely wife Sara.
With 12x optical zoom, I can get in close to the action. With a high ISO and image stabilization, I can keep the flash off even in dimly lit situations, allowing me to capture the natural lighting and mood without interrupting the action.
If you’ve been following my flickr feed, you already know I’m a sucker for macro shots, and that’s what finally put me over the top on this camera. You can bring the focus all the way down to the lens, effectively capturing anything you can get in front of the camera in 6 megapixels of extreme closeup. You can bet I’m going to be playing with that a lot!
Last night, I went on an “apartment photo hunt,” looking for anything beautiful in the normal everyday stuff we’ve got lying around. Some of the results are below… Have I mentioned I love this camera? Thank you Sara!!!! <3

I just found this nifty flickr tool called bubblr that allows you to link pictures together and add caption bubbles. Very fun.
Watching the live music at BarcampSL
May 17th, 2006
I nearly missed Barcamp Second Life, but thankfully, C.C. Chapman posted some photos live from the event to his Flikr feed, which showed up in my feedreader.
I popped on in just in time to catch a live music performance by foxyflwr cure, and to chat with some of the folks there.
There’s really no explaining how interesting the secondlife phenomenon is unless you’ve been there yourself. There’s mindbending moments when you’re really there.
My first sunset in SL was one of those very experiences. There I was, hovering high above a fairground, and suddenly I’m struck by the sheer beauty of the sky turning orange, and then the sun slipping slowly below the horizon to leave a purplish grey twilight.
I had to shake my head and remember that it wasn’t real… The combination of the beauty of the rendered sky, the almost imperceptible creeping of the sun over the horizon, and my mind filling in the rest made arguably as powerful as any sunset I’ve seen in real life.
Today’s concert, played live in front of our barcamp audience, was one of those moments. It’s just something you have to experience for yourself.
You can see more pictures from Barcamp SecondLife here or check out everyone’s barcampSL pictures here
So close!

I literally just yelled out “son of a poop!” in my office. I got so excited about Tara mentioning Felt Up that I missed 123456. After all that hype!
Our first internet coverage!. Tara (aka miss rogue) is an marketing genius in the new, community based, cluetrain driven sense. She’s the major muscle behind Riya’s successes so far and this is a very very nice compliment indeed.
123456 almost here!
April 5th, 2006
In 15 minutes or so, it will be 1:23 4/5/6. Take pictures and tag em’ 123456. Lots of folks are already doing it!
Many people actually already celebrated 01:02:03 04/05/06, but I like the version without the seconds a bit better!
Best part is, we get to do this again in a month when the european version of this date comes around. Europe lists the date in a sane way, going from small unit to big unit (day-month-year). So may 4th 2006 will be their 123456.
