C.C. Chapman interviews me on SXSW for Newbies
March 24th, 2008
While at SXSW, C.C. Chapman created a video series called SXSW for Newbies using mDialog.
Here’s my interview with him, where he asked for advice for Newbies:
We also recorded a quick demo of Nanoloop, the Gameboy music creation cart I’ve been working with.
Video: Dave Clausen and his LED oscilloscope project
November 16th, 2007
At this week’s NYCResistor meeting, I shot some video of Dave Clausen’s LED oscilloscope project. I set out to capture this video for Bre, since he’s in Vienna at the moment and wants to learn shift registers, but once I saw the project I knew that it had to be shared.
We’ve all gotten excited about this project, and Dave has agreed to open up his code and document everything, but needs a little help creating the schematics, etc. Zack ‘Hoeken’ Smith of RepRap will be giving a demo on Eagle at the next NYCResistor meeting so we can create the schematic, and we’ll be documenting this whole project from start to finish then.
Soon after that, we’re looking to create a kit for this project to make it easy for people to duplicate it at home. It’s a great project for learning audio processing, breadboarding using arduino, shift registers, and how to make and use an LED matrix. That, and it’s just cool. I want one of these for my desk.
DIY Vampire Fangs - Weekend Projects Podcast
October 26th, 2007
Last weekend I helped Bre Pettis out with his Make: Weekend Projects Podcast. Each week Bre presents a project that you can do at home yourself, and since Halloween is just around the corner, I figured I’d show him my method for making fangs.
I think the fangs themselves came out pretty well, but even cooler, we show you how to make 3 different types of mold: alginate, plastic, and acrylic. You could make a duplicate of just about anything using this stuff!
Check out the video above - if you want to learn more, you can read the PDF that Bre put together, and subscribe to the show to get a new project each week.

The song is definitely an earworm too. I wouldn’t be surprised to start seeing this pop up all over the net.

Videoblog: Top of the Hill Grill in Brattleboro
May 10th, 2007
Here’s a new episode of my vlog - you can see all the episodes here in the blip.tv showplayer or even subscribe to the ipod and appleTV friendly rss feed.

In Brattleboro, VT we stopped for some awesome BBQ at a friend of a friend's restaurant, the Top of the Hill Grill. The food was amazing, the view was great, and the owner and head chef was nice enough to talk with me for a bit.

Definitely made some mistakes with this episode - I should have focused on John rather than trying to keep a 2-shot that wasn’t working for so long. I’m also still getting the hang of splicing in images via iMovie, but I think they came out okay.
This episode was inspired by Eric Rochow’s excellent cooking and food exploration videoblog, gardenfork.tv
Plenty of Wiis at the Times Square Toys ‘R Us
November 21st, 2006
Sara and I made a trip to purchase the Wii on Sunday, a day after launch. They were handing out bracelets in the 3 hour line, and we were among the first 10 who didn’t get them.
We were bummed, but they told us that there would be more systems Monday.
Well, yesterday, I sauntered in right after they opened and picked up a Wii without waiting in much line at all! For about an hour after I picked up my Wii I couldn’t stop smiling. I didn’t realize quite how excited I’d gotten about this little game system.
Something about it’s new take on gameplay that focuses on making it enjoyable for everyone rather than just “gamers” had me giddy to bring the machine home for the holidays.
I had this image of standing around the tv with our families waving the wiimotes, making noises as they tried to make the game work and laughing as they played.
Well, Sara and I broke the system open last night, and to me it’s already worth every penny! Not surprisingly, I love the Wii, but the telling factor is that Sara does too. You can’t help but get your whole body involved as you play, and it’s a huge amount of fun. We played quite a bit of Wii Tennis last night - here’s a clip:

We’re saving the other games for the holidays, so that we’re not already practiced at them when everyone goes to play for the first time. I can’t wait!
